Navajo (Arizona), Robe, wool, c. 1840/50.
These robes are made of churro wool from sheep that the Dineh (Navajo) raise. The wool’s really soft and dense, kind of similar to merino. The older robes like this one pre-date aniline dyes, so the colors are these incredibly deep, variegated hues - blue from indigo, red from lac, brown from mordant dyes and the cream is the undyed color of the wool.
